An Exercise

I decided to settle back into my studio by setting myself a challenge.  Three small (20" x 30" or so) quilts, starting very simple and getting more complex with each piece.

The first piece was just a sketch in fabric in black and white.  The basic figure.
The second piece added a secondary figure behind the black linear figure.
The third piece added more complex piecing behind the black figure.
Interesting exercise.  I like the second piece, with a simple two color figure behind the black lines.  The third piece became unnecessarily complex, and is much less effective.  I think I'll try it again tomorrow.

Hi, Heather. Excellent exercise. I always enjoy seeing your work and I find this exercise quite successful. It seems to me that the third one invites some sort of mask over it to just barely reveal the complexity and pique the viewer's curiosity. Just a thought...Lovely work in any case. Interesting lines and colors.
best, nadia
I like the second as well, great color contrast. I'm a fellow texan. is it as hot there as it is in Houston today? great finish

Thanks, everyone! Maidenhair, t was beautiful here in North Texas on Friday, but is supposed to be in the upper 80s today. Luckily, very low humidity.
What a great exercise. This is much along the lines of what I want to do with this idea in my mind.

LOL. I think you just clarified a step for me with your exercise! And I wasn't even thinking that way!
