I’ve moved to Massachusetts!

Brian retired last December, so it was time for a new adventure. Massachusetts, here we come! We inherited B’s family’s summer cottage on Cape Cod. We’ve spent many wonderful vacations there over the years. It was very small (832 sq ft), so we decided to renovate and expand it. We added a second story and a kitchen extension. Construction started 2 years ago and finished in August. We sold our Texas house (in 6 days!) and moved to Eastham just before Thanksgiving. It’s a traditional Cape Cod house. There are still lots of boxes to unpack, but we’ve made a good start. The living areas first (baths, kitchen, living room): And of course, my studio! And, finally, a glimpse of my supplies and fabric stash area: A bit of a mess… I have been trying to think of how I can better organize it. Suggestions are welcome! But for now, it’s on to the next box. Who knows what treasures we’ll discover.

The Illusion of Transparency

It is, of course, impossible to create true transparency without using transparent materials. But you can create the optical illusion of transparency using opaque materials such as paper and fabric. At our August NTAQ meeting we tried to create the illusion of transparency in our paper collages. It is logically very simple. If a red square overlaps a blue square, the area of overlap will be a mix of both colors, purple. If a yellow circle overlaps a blue square, the area of overlap will be green. And so on. If you are working in white, black and shades of gray, as we were, the overlap will be the middle value of the two pieces. So if a light gray rectangle overlaps a black square, the resulting overlap will be medium gray. The success of the illusion depends on finding a middle color that convinces us of its authenticity. Flowers, Students and Kippers! Oh My!

Spring has sprung right past us here in Fort Worth, and it feels like summer once again. But this summer should be a little different, since it will probably be my last summer in Texas. As we speak, the renovation of our Cape Cod house is underway. What has been a dream is fast becoming reality. It colors your view of things. Summers here are muggy and hot. Neither Brian nor I enjoy them, which is why we are retiring on the Cape. But we do love our garden, which peaks in early summer, and we do enjoy spending time with our friends. So we are determined to have a great Last Summer in Texas (LSIT). So, first, flowers. We love lilies, both day lilies and species lilies, and we have a lot of them in our garden. In late May/early June, the lilies are at their peak. The other perennials are starting to bloom as well. The coneflowers (echinacea) are lovely this year!
