Improvisational Piecing at NTAQ

NTAQ (North Texas Art Quilters) has decided this year to do something slightly different.  We have divided the year into quarters, and each quarter a member (or two) will lead an intensive study on something of interest to the group.  We decided to kick off the year with improvisational piecing, led by Wendy and me.

In January, we asked everyone to work with black and white strip sets, pieced together and then cut into chunks and slices and arranged to make interesting configurations.  We did a quick demo at the meeting:
Wendy and I handed out black and white paper for "practice pieces."  Members cut and glued a few quick compositions and then moved to working with fabric.  At our February meeting they revealed their black and white compositions.

The first is mine.  I don't seem to have taken a picture of the finished piece, but here it is nearly finished:
Compositions by Bethany, Kay, Jay and Wendy:
Their new assignment, due at the March meeting, is to create an improvisational piece in color.  We gave them a list of stripset "recipes" to sew together and use in composing their piece.  They started cutting during the meeting:
And then they went home to sew.  I can't wait to see what they came up with!

Because of the assignment we did not have an Inspiration Challenge piece due in February.  We'll resume the challenge in March.
